The Southwest Association of Neighbors (SWAN is located near the the downtown area of Canton, Ohio. Our Northern boundary is Tuscarawas Street and our Southern boundary is 9th Street. Our Western boundary is Schroyer and our Eastern boundary is Market. We are an active part of the Neighborhood Leadership Council that meets monthly at the Stark Community Foundation.
The Southwest Association of Neighbors (SWAN) is a group of committed neighbors with the goal of making our neighborhood beautiful and safe. We believe that communication with neighbors is essential. We provide a variety of activities and opportunities for the people of our culturally diverse neighborhood to become acquainted. We support the youth of our community through a variety of activities and through partnering with Compton Elementary School to reward responsible behavior and academic excellence.
The neighborhood garden at Union and 6th Street SW has been a focus for neighbor working with neighbor and to give the youth in our community an opportunity to discover the joys of working with the soil. The sign was designed and donated by Sign Pro. The swans were designed, built, and donated by Robert Smith in memory of his wife, Barbara. He is a resident of Canton and has lived in the southwest community for more than 50 years.
Each Christmas the Southwest Association of Neighbors (SWAN) organizes something special for families with children. Some years we have distributed gift bags or candy. In 2011 we plan to give Christmas hams to the families in our neighborhood who have children. SWAN also organizes a Christmas activity for those who are over 50 years of age. Generally we go out to see Christmas lights. For some of our older citizens, this is one of the few times during the year that they get out of town.
In 2011 The Southwest Association of Neighbors (SWAN) began a new outreach to the community by starting a neighborhood vegetable garden with raised beds and even some elevated beds for those in wheelchairs or with disabilities that don’t allow them to bend over to prepare the soil and harvest the produce. This was a very successful venture and turned another vacant lot into a place of beauty. Thank you to ABCD for giving SWAN the use of this lot on the southwest corner of 6th street SW..
