SWAN HISTORY
The building of new ABCD housing on 6th Street SW and McKinley in Canton, Ohio, was the catalyst for starting a neighborhood organization in the fall of 2000. At that time Will Dent, CEO of ABCD, requested Gwen Singleterry and Rita Barrett, long-time residents of the community to organize a gathering of neighbors for the purpose of explaining the benefits of working together for community improvement. Both women were recent graduates from Neighborhood Leadership Training provided by the Stark Community Foundation.
A group of neighbors met at the Goodwill cafeteria then located at 9th Street SW & McKinley to discuss problems in the community and to look for solutions. We were encouraged in our efforts by the chairman of Summit Neighborhood, our representative at City Council, a representative of the police department, candidates for state representative, and other influential people in the greater Canton area.
As a result, Stephen & Constance Brown committed to assisting Gwen Singleterry & Rita Barrett, as additional members of the new organization. Other volunteers helped us during that first year and we sponsored several activities for the children of the community. These were focused on, improving safety and beautifying the area. We also had a community Christmas party that winter. ABCD became our fiscal agent & assisted us in the first stages of development.
In 2001, the Browns attended & graduated from the Neighborhood Leadership Training classes provided by the Stark Community Foundation. That year SWAN applied for and received its first grant from the Foundation for the purposes of neighborhood beautification and activities for youth. Each year SWAN has sent community leaders to these excellent training classes. Together we dream for better communities and learn to partner with the wide variety of personalities and organizations that share our goals.
Name
Selecting the perfect name for our community was an exercise in mental acrobatics at our first board meeting. When Stephen Brown proposed to call ourselves Southwest Neighborhood Association or Southwest Association of Neighbors, Rita Barrett recognized the acronym SWAN--the perfect name!
